ABOUT

Welcome to 2nd grade gifted.  This year your child will embark on a journey that will provide them with the essential  foundations that will be needed in years to come.  Our goal is to make your child's classroom environment a pleasant one, filled with rich experiences, challenging activities, and lasting friendships.

Dismissal

Here are the dismissal procedures for 2nd Grade:

  • Students are dismissed on the 51st street entrance.

  • There is only one carpool lane.

  • Bright pink signs should be posted on visor in order to make dismissal quicker.

  • Names will be called on the radio and megaphone so that students will be ready to get in their cars when they pull up.

  • Parents or gaurdians are to stay in their cars during dismissal.

  • Please be patient and cooperative as this is done for the safety of your child.

  • Those parents or gaurdians that wish to park must do so on the outside of the dismissal gate and use the crosswalks to cross the streets.

Homelearning

Here's what you should expect:

  • Students will write their homework down in their agenda in the morning.

  • They will get a Packet at the beginning of the week and must turn it in by Friday.

  • They can work ahead, but please know that homelearning is assigned so that they get practice on what they learned that day in class.

  • If they do not understand something they can bring it to my attention the next day so I can review it with them before assessing.

  • Spelling choice will be given monthly.  Students get to chose which activity they would like to do on a nightly basis.

  • There is no Homelearning on Fridays.

Extra Credit

  • Students will have the opportunity to pick from a variety of book report projects monthly.

  • It is not mandatory.

  • Students will get an extra credit A if completed correctly.

Computer Programs

  • Students are recommended to complete 3 sessions of I-ready reading and I-ready math per week.

  • This can be completed in class and at home.

  • Students will be asked to write down the date they completed the sessions.

  • Reflex math is also recommended 2 times per week and can also be completed at home and in class.

Genius Hour

  • Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom.  It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school.

  • The teacher provides a set amount of time for the students to work on their passion projects.  Students are then challenged to explore something to do a project over that they want to learn about.  They spend several weeks researching the topic before they start creating a product that will be shared with the class. Deadlines are limited and creativity is encouraged. Throughout the process the teacher facilitates the student projects to ensure that they are on task.

Child Safety

Here are some procedures that must be followed in order to keep your child safe :

  • Students must go to the music room in the morning and wait for their class to be picked up.

  • Parents or gaurdians must go to the office prior to entering the building during school hours. There should be no adults in the building without a pass.

  • Anyone who is picking up a student before dismissal must show proper ID to the office staff.

  • During dismissal parents must not park in the visitors parking lot unless told to do so by one of the dismissal securities.
